Thrifty Thursday fundraiser supports Women’s Centre work

Article by: Sudbury.com

The Sudbury Women’s Centre (SWC) has unveiled a new monthly fundraiser aimed at helping women, girls, trans and non-binary individuals navigate violent and challenging life situations.

Calling it Thrifty Thursdays, the SWC invites the community to join the cause by thrifting at their “My Sister’s Closet” boutique.

Over the past year, SWC said it has experienced a significant surge in demand, seeing a 120-per-cent increase in the number of clients seeking support. While the organization was funded to support 300 unique clients, more than 650 people received services, while more than 15,000 hygiene items and 80,000 clothing items were distributed to those in need.

The need for community support and donations has never been more urgent, SWC said. The Thrifty Thursday fundraiser will raise funds to purchase essential items like shampoo, soap, toothpaste, socks, and underwear, which are not commonly donated.

The fundraiser will be held the last Thursday of each month, with all proceeds going towards providing clients with basic needs items.

The next event will be held on July 27 from 6-8 p.m. at SWC, located at 174 Douglas St., Suite 201. Participants not only have a chance to support a crucial cause but also an opportunity to win a Starbucks prize pack valued at over $100.

“Through our Thrifty Thursday Fundraiser, we offer an opportunity for everyone to support our cause and make a real difference in the lives of vulnerable individuals in our community,” said Giulia Carpenter the centre’s executive director, in the news release. “Your contribution allows us to continue offering our essential services free of charge.”

SWC wants to clarify that clothing will remain free for their clients or those going through difficult life circumstances during their regular business hours.
