Thrifty Thursday fundraiser continues in support of Sudbury residents
The Sudbury Women’s Centre (SWC) continues to host their monthly Thrifty Thursday initiative, aimed at helping women, girls and gender-diverse individuals access essential needs in times of struggle.
As the cost of living continues to rise, SWC has noticed a significant surge in demand, with a 120 per cent increase in clients seeking support. Most recently, the centre has experienced a heightened need for hygiene items such as shampoo, toothpaste, soap and underwear. These items are not commonly donated, and they are often distributed quickly.
Recently, more than $2,000 worth of hygiene items were distributed in a single day, and more than 15,000 individual items were distributed throughout the past year.
“Thrifty Thursday has allowed us to provide essential items that we might not have been able to otherwise, and we hope to continue this momentum,” Giulia Carpenter, the centre’s executive director, said Thursday. “It is a great opportunity for the community to support our mission and sustain our commitment to providing crucial services free of charge.”
On the third Thursday of each month, the community is invited to the thrift shop at SWC’s boutique, My Sister’s Closet. All of the proceeds go towards providing clients with basic needs items, including hygiene items.
The next Thrifty Thursday event takes place on Oct. 26 from 6-8 p.m. at the centre, 174 Douglas St., suite 201. If participants bring along two new hygiene items, they will be entered in a draw for a chance to win three pairs of Halloween-themed earrings or a $25 gift card to The Daventry Kitchen and Bar. Clothing items remain free for SWC clients or those going through difficult life circumstances.
