SWC’s next ‘Thrifty Thursday’ coming up on Oct. 26

The community is invited to come thrift at SWC’s “My Sister’s Closet” boutique, with all of the proceeds going towards providing clients with basic needs items, including hygiene items.

Sudbury Women’s Centre (SWC) continues to host its monthly Thrifty Thursday initiative, aimed at helping women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals access essential needs in times of struggle.

The next Thrifty Thursday event will be taking place on Oct. 26 from 6-8 p.m. at SWC, located at 174 Douglas Street, Suite 201. If participants bring along two new hygiene items, they will be entered in a draw for a chance to win three pairs of Halloween-themed earrings or a $25 gift card to The Daventry Kitchen & Bar.

In a release, SWC stated that they have noticed a significant surge in demand, with a 120-per-cent increase in clients seeking support as the cost of living rises. Most recently, the centre has experienced a heightened need for hygiene items such as shampoo, toothpaste, soap and underwear. These items are not commonly donated, and they are often distributed quickly.

Recently, more than $2,000 worth of hygiene items were distributed in a single day, and more than 15,000 individual items were distributed throughout the past year.

Thrifty Thursday provides an important opportunity for the community to join the cause while sourcing their clothing in an affordable and sustainable way. On the third Thursday of each month, the community is invited to come thrift at SWC’s My Sister’s Closet boutique. All of the proceeds go towards providing clients with basic needs items, including hygiene items.

“Thrifty Thursday has allowed us to provide essential items that we might not have been able to otherwise, and we hope to continue this momentum,” said Giulia Carpenter, SWC executive director. “It is a great opportunity for the community to support our mission and sustain our commitment to providing crucial services free of charge.”

SWC wants to remind everyone that clothing items remain free for their clients or those going through difficult life circumstances during their regular business hours.
